White Water Gallery – National Juried Drawing Exhibition

November 20th, 2009

Last weekend I had the privilege of jurying White Water Gallery’s First National Juried Drawing Exhibition with Derek Liddington. (Derek is also a drawER. You should check out his stuff here)

The gallery received over 60 entries from across Canada and 23 artists representing communities including Halifax, Montreal, Toronto and North Bay were chosen for the exhibition. We received a wonderful response to the show of truly dedicated and engaged work. It is so exciting to see strong, contemporary drawing and even better to be a part of exhibiting it.

Derek and I were pleased to be able to award three awards for the exhibition – Best in Show and two Juror’s Choice Awards.

Liv Bonli was awarded Best in Show for her breathtaking drawing “Trip, 2009″. Her work is spare, but highly skilled and ultimately beautiful in its simplicity.

Mark Stebbins was awarded a Juror’s Choice for his intense and wonderfully involving piece “Data Cluster 3, 2009″.  From the moment I unpacked his colourful meticulous pieces, I couldn’t take my eyes off them.

And Robert Malinowski was awarded a Juror’s Choice award for his playful and provoking drawing “Sugar on Top, 2009″.  There is just something about those “spun-sugar-headed” ladies that are hard to resist.

White Water Gallery is located in North Bay, Ontario. If you get a chance to see this show I absolutely recommend it.
